The Hubs and I recently spent four wonderful days in the Apple Isle. This was my third trip to Tasmania and we decided to make Hobart our base this time around. When I starting planning my itinerary, visiting some of the best wineries in Tasmania was at the very top of my list. There a bunch of wineries near Hobart and I focused on those that specialise in Tasmanian white wine, particularly Tasmanian sauvignon blanc. As I researched Tasmania’s best wineries, a few Hobart wineries were consistently mentioned. I added a few that were highly recommended by the experts and threw in a few wild cards of my own. Tasmanian Road Trip: 6 Days In The Spectacular East
*** Updated January 2020 ***
Growing up in the western suburbs of Sydney money didn’t grow on trees (according to my Mum anyway) and our annual family holiday usually meant a road trip in the trusty Kingswood. Fast forward 40 years and after enduring enjoying my fair share of road trips with my own kids, Low Cost Carriers (LCC’s) are changing the face of domestic travel. Australia is a huge country and going anywhere other than ‘just up the road’ means long hours behind the wheel so I can certainly understand the appeal of a quick, cheap flight. That said, the great Aussie road trip is the unfortunate victim of these bargain basement fares. We are raising a whole generation that may never know the joy of travelling in a car packed to the rafters on a scorching summer day with endless whines of ‘are we there yet’ coming from the back seat. Good times! Even with the advent of cheap flights, I’m not quite ready to put the road trip out to pasture just yet. On our recent Tasmanian road trip, The Hubs and I explored Hobart, The Freycinet Peninsula, The Bay Of Fires and Launceston, taking in some of the most breathtaking scenery I have ever seen. Bicheno Tasmania: Freycinet’s Most Affordable Town
As an Aussie who travels regularly to SE Asia, I am always shocked by just how expensive it is to travel in my home country. Freycinet Tasmania has long been on my bucket list, but the cost has always held me back. I just couldn’t justify dropping $2k on a bed for the night, no matter how fabulous that bed was. I knew there had to be a way to see this magnificent part of the world without selling my first born and I was determined to find it. Bicheno Tasmania is a real gem. It’s about 18klms from the world famous Freycinet National Park and just as spectacular, but the prices are a world away. Read on for all the details …
The Prickly Cactus Launceston: A Mexican Twist
I’ve eaten lots of Mexican food in my time. From the famous Fajitas I make at home to the delight of my family and friends to a favorite Cantina we visit every time we go to Oahu, the appeal is strong. How can you resist the promise of hot and spicy dishes that you eat with your hands without being frowned on? The Prickly Cactus Launceston is in a central location and puts it own unique twist on a raft of Mexican classics. Read on for all the details …
Hotel Grand Chancellor Launceston: Location & Value
If you have read any of my previous hotel reviews you will know that I favour sleek, light-filled, contemporary spaces, so it may come as a bit of a shock to find me in a heritage hotel for the last stop on our Tasmanian road trip. I initially scrolled straight past the Hotel Grand Chancellor Launceston in the list of 30 or so hotels that met my search criteria based on the heritage façade alone. After checking the whole list, it became clear that heritage dominates the scene in Lonnie and I was going to have to make some compromises. The Hotel Grand Chancellor Launceston ticked most of my boxes, and won me over with a great location and excellent value. Read on for all the details …
Black Cow Bistro Launceston: Australia’s Best Steak?
When I started planning my Tasmanian road trip, there was one place guaranteed to make the itinerary; The Black Cow Bistro Launceston. I first visited the Black Cow 4 years ago with friends after visiting Cradle Mountain and have been talking it up to The Hubs ever since. The fact that the Black Cow Bistro Launceston etched itself so firmly in my memory is testament to the food quality. I couldn’t wait to get back for another taste of what is quite possibly Australia’s best steak. If you love beef, put the Black Cow Bistro Launceston at the very top of your list when you are in town. Read on for all the details …
A Rainy Day In Spectacular Cataract Gorge Launceston
On our first morning in Launceston we woke up to torrential rain. After checking the scene from our hotel window we crawled back under the covers for another hour hoping the miserable weather would clear. It didn’t. At 9am, unable to sleep any longer, we prised ourselves from the bed in despair. We had planned to spend the day hiking the many trails of Cataract Gorge but the prospect of bush walking dripping wet through sludge didn’t really appeal. We googled ‘things to do in Launceston in the rain’ (as you do lol) and while the usual suspects popped up (museums, movies, indoor pool etc), nothing inspired. By 10am I’d had enough of sitting around and decided to brave the elements and get out amongst it anyway. Read on for all the details …
Where To Eat In Hobart Harbour & Salamanca Place
Eating out is one of my greatest pleasures. The appeal of enjoying a delicious meal, prepared with skill, that I don’t have to clean up after is hard to resist. At home, I have my favourites that I frequent regularly but when travelling choosing a restaurant is a whole different ball game. Navigating the plethora of choices is a minefield and I’ve spent countess hours over the years deliberating where my next meal will be. If you are wondering where to eat in Hobart, read on for all the details …
