Sunday (photo day) was hectic around my way. First up I had to deliver piping hot party food to the littlest mini enabler’s birthday bash because the venue did not have any heating facilities. I was a bit late after getting lost but the 20 odd 7yo party goers weren’t fazed. Afterwards I snapped these pics before whipping myself into a cleaning frenzy to ensure the house was fit for ‘company’. Next it was off to the shops to grab essential supplies while shoveling a drive-through cheeseburger down for sustenance. In the evening, great friends gathered for food and wine while we announced the winners of our annual footy tipping comp. My grey mesh crop top and black skinnies got me through cleaning the house in casual comfort but was still acceptable to front up at the two gatherings. Read on for all the details …
Crop Top & Mesh Flashbacks
I haven’t worn a crop top since my teens because two kids have not been kind to my mid section and I have never like mesh. I still have psychological scars from the late 80’s and early 90’s when they were all the rage. Madonna has a lot to answer for on that one! Women were not the only fashion victims though, I still remember one particular tragic from a weekend ski trip where we called him ‘mesh top guy’ all weekend because he never took it off. In my defense, we didn’t do it to his face and I only 19. Anyone else have Redgum circa 1983 running through their head after that statement?
Zara Grey Mesh Crop Top
Given my aversion to both mesh and crops you may wonder how I ended up in this Zara grey mesh crop top. I picked it up when I was in Hawaii but it really hasn’t been warm enough to wear it until now. The label might say it’s a crop top but I dispute that as the nifty white lining preserves my dignity and ensures none of my wobbly bits are unflattering exposed. And as for the mesh, I love this modern take. The soft grey tones and closer weave rather than the black gaping holes of the 80’s is much more my style. I kept the rest of the outfit simple with a pair of black skinny jeans (similar worn here), a classic grey cross body, my chunkiest watch (also worn here) and grey chuck’s for comfort’s sake.

Love this outfit! I was always a fan of Madonna’s style back in the day, and the crop top was one of her staples. I keep seeing them for sale in the shops and wonder how I could wear them now so thanks to your post, I think I will try it your way, with a great tee underneath! You look fabulous.

Allison, I really like this outfit. I am a casual kind of gal and this is right up my alley. The tope is perfect for those of us who have a few extra rolls around our middles and pairs well with the black skinnies, gray chucks and bag. Great look. Thanks for sharing and hosting the link up. – Amy

I don’t wear crop tops but I love this one, the colour is great. It’s a really chic way of reinventing something that a lot of us avoid. Even if I had a washboard stomach I don’t think I’d show off my midriff, it just doesn’t feel right to me, I’d want to keep pulling it down!

It’s so funny you say that these are my first ever pair of chucks. I have tried on heaps and never bought them because I thought they made my feet look weird. The Hubs told me I was being an idiot (nothing like a healthy dose of reality right?) so I finally bought them and now I am in love. I really like the graduated greys to white as it adds a little bit of interest to a pretty functional item. ?
