Hawaii, and America in general, serve up massive portion sizes. After almost a week of eating to excess and paying the price I wanted a healthier lunch option. As usual, I turned to my trusty friend Trip Advisor to check out my options and Goofy Cafe & Dine Waikiki was near the top of the list. Read on for the details …
Goofy Cafe & Dine Waikiki Overview
Goofy Cafe & Dine Waikiki is half way between the Sheraton Waikiki where we stayed and The Ala Moana shopping centre (read more on Waikiki shopping here). Their mantra is “local first; organic wherever possible”. Goofy’s is incredibly popular and on the day we visited there as a line out the door so we had to wait almost an hour for a table, all the while thinking this better be worth it! The dining area is simple, light filled and cooled by large overhead fans. Situated upstairs on a main road, there are no views but that is not what draws people to Goofy’s. Mains start at around $10 so Goofy’s won’t break the bank.

The Food
Goofy Cafe & Dine Waikiki offers an all day breakfast menu and well as more substantial fare. I chose the local fruits acai bowl (pronounced ah-sah-ee). As usual I asked for a change to the menu and switched the blueberries for my preferred strawberries. This caused much commotion and consultation with the kitchen ensued. They finally agreed with a $2 surcharge. I have never had an acai bowl before but was certainly aware of the “superfood” hype and it fit my healthy eating agenda to a T. I wasn’t sure what to expect and for the uninitiated, an acai bowl is basically a thick smoothie made from acai berries topped with whatever you like, usually fruit, oatmeal or yoghurt. Brimming with antioxidants, acai berry tastes a bit like a cross between a raspberry and chocolate. I had my first tentative bite and wasn’t revolted so I went back for a few more. It was perfectly edible but not really for me. I think this is just a matter of personal taste though as plenty of other diners were tucking in with relish. The Hubs clearly wasn’t on board with my health mission and he opted for the Big Island Beef Loco Moco. After not being particularly thrilled with my meal I was eyeing The Hubs’ plate across the table with envy. Being a nice guy he offered to share and even made sure the egg didn’t touch anything I was eating. Loco Moco is a typical Hawaiian dish consisting of rice, gravy, hamburger patties and fried egg which was created when the inventor had nothing else in the fridge. I love gravy and often find restaurants skimp on the serving size but not so at Goofy Cafe & Dine Waikiki. It seemed a strange combination to me initially, but it was truly a match made in heaven. Very moorish!

That bowl of fruit looks so pretty and delicious! We loved the interesting choices available in Hawaii. Oddly there wasn’t as much fruit in general as I was expecting and then I learned that everything has to be shipped in from the mainland which makes fruit hard to get and really expensive. Love food experiences when we travel! New stuff and time to really savor the food and conversation.

I would say that the Loco Moco is healthier than the plate of fruit, as strawberries, bananas and pineapple are full of sugar. However, I think I’d prefer the bowl of fruit, it’s what I’d expect to eat in Waikiki. The Acai fruit sounds very interesting and being a superfruit full of antioxidents I think I’d eat as much as possible whether I liked it or not (like a do with brocolli).

I never though of it that way James. I don’t feel so guilty about stealing some of The Hubs’ now ?

I definitely know that America’s food portion sizes definitely don’t agree with the rest of the world. I do like how you get a lot of food for a small price though. I’m glad you were able to get something more healthy at the Goofy Cafe. Those pineapples and strawberries look to die for! 🙂

That is true Gina. Glad we stumbled on Goofy!

This sounds delicious (for me the vegetarian options). I love the idea of local and organic food. The prices are also very reasonable.

Delicious! We are hoping to maybe visit Hawaii next year so will keep this place in mind. I remember being so overwhelmed with the size of dishes in US when I was there, so I don’t blame you for wanting to try the healthier option! You can feel a bit weighed down and it’s just way too easy to overeat there!
Sydney Fashion Hunter says
Tell me about it! I am still paying the price Juliette lol. We also used to share meals a lot which I didn’t like because I felt it make us look cheap but I swear that’s not the case it just there is soooooo much food!

The local food in Hawaii is always incredible!! I went with my family about 4 years ago, and we would always go to this taco place just down the street from our rental because they would serve some of the freshest ingredients we had ever tasted!! I am definitely a sucker for acai bowls, so I’ll check out the other reviews before deciding to order it from here. Will you be posting more about your stay in Hawaii as well? Can’t wait to read all about your adventures!
