Review: Romeos Bar & Grillery Legian Bali

May 13, 2016

Fash Packing by Sydney Fashion Hunter: Romeos Bar & Grillery - Rendang

We have visited Romeos Bar & Grillery in Legian Bali twice in recent times. One was forced on us due to Nyepi and the other was by choice. Our experience was a bit hit and miss but I’m sharing the good and the bad so you can make an informed choice. Read on for all the details …

Romeos Bar & Grillery Overview

Romeos Bar & Grillery is situated at the front of the Ossotel overlooking the street. The decor has an industrial modern feel and is flooded with light during the day but all dark and moody at night. The main dining room has plenty of tables so you should have no problem turning up without a booking. There are lots of quirky touches scattered around such as these funky lights.

Romeo’s Bar & Grillery Room Service

On our first stay at Ossotel we didn’t sample the in house restaurant for anything other than breakfast. The second time we had no choice, it was Nyepi and we were in lock down. (Read more about Nyepi in my epic list of 110+ amazing things to do in Bali. The restaurant itself was only serving buffet so we chose to have both lunch and dinner from the room service menu. For lunch we had a Romeo and Juliet burger each (now simply called the Romeo burger) which was perfectly pleasant. Served with chips and a barbecue like sauce, it hot the spot nicely. For dinner we wanted Pizza but they had closed the Pizza oven down at 7pm (dammit!) so we opted for Fettuccine Carbonara (me) and a Nasi Goreng (him). I must have deleted the photos sorry! The menu did not state that the pasta came with mushrooms so I spent 15 minutes digging them all out before I could take a bite. We enjoyed our meals under the circumstances but I would have preferred to be out dining in a restaurant rather than eating off my bed. Our last day in the hotel was Mr SFH’s birthday and the kitchen surprised us with a lovely little cake to celebrate. Nice touch guys!

Romeos Bar

Romeos Bar & Grillery does great cocktails and has a well stocked bar. They are a little pricey by Bali standards but worth the splurge. One evening when I was hankering for a Chambord they were one of the only places in town to deliver. Perch on a bar stool near the window and watch the world go by 🙂

Romeo’s Restaurant

Given we enjoyed our room service last time we thought we would try Romeo’s for real on our third visit. We are kinda sorry we did. My steak was overcooked and a little chewy. I adore bearnaise sauce but this version was not at all creamy and tasted like melted butter. The Hubs’ Rendang was OK but lacked the depth of flavour this curry should have. The side of onion rings provided further disappointment. They were so bland and I didn’t understand why they were served with a tartare like sauce.

The Verdict

If you are going to try Romeos Bar & Grillery I would suggest sticking with the burgers and pasta. We could have just caught them on an off day but I will be given them a wide birth.  My bumper Bali restaurant review roundup post has plenty of other options for dining in Bali you should check out.
