I’m always up for a good night out. The perfect night for me involves a few bevvies, some great music and dancing the night away. When I saw Frankensteins Laboratory, I knew it was right up my alley. Having enjoyed our visit to Dracula’s on Queensland’s Gold Coast we had a fair idea what to expect, but being Bali you never know. Read on for all the details …
Frankensteins Laboratory Pre-Show
Frankensteins Laboratory is extremely popular so make sure you book. We called at lunchtime for that night, but the earliest we could get was four days away. Table allocation is on a first-come first-served basis, so book as far ahead as you can to guarantee great seats. Frankensteins Laboratory was just a short cab ride away from the Magani hotel in Legian where we stayed but traffic is unpredictable allow plenty of time as tables are only hold for half and hour. We arrived at 7pm to a bar already pumping out a stream of cocktails, many in novelty containers such as beakers and IV bags. Audience participation begins early and guest photos with the resident zombies are done in an orderly fashion on stage. Many diners enjoyed the make up service (regular $5 or deluxe $10) which was a big hit with the ankle biters.
Food
Frankensteins Laboratory has a varied menu that runs the gamut from burgers, pizza and pasta to salads and Indonesian favourites. Of course deadly desserts and dedicated kids fare features. If you are feeling particularly hungry, you might what to take the monster slab challenge, which gives you 20 minutes to eat over 1kg of burger and sides. I ordered the Dr Frankenstein burger and The Hubs opted for the Brain Surgeon Pizza, which were slow to come out. My burger was large but lacked ooomph. The Hubs’ pizza was also bland. While our meals filled the hole, a little tweaking could have made them substantially better. That said, the food was never the draw and I knew the best was yet to come.
The Show
High flying, high energy, high jinx sums up the Frankenstein Laboratory cabaret show. Three different shows are performed each night at 8.30, 9.30 and 10.30. I’m not going to give too much away, but staying for all three is a must. The music will have you bopping in your seat or if you are a little more carefree, dancing on the tables, which is encouraged. And did I mention that all this is free? Yes free! While of course you pay for food and drink, the show is actually free! We had such a good time I included it in my epic list of 110+ things to do in Bali.
Final Thoughts
We had a ball at Frankensteins Laboratory. In fact, it was one of my favourite nights in Bali. The food was sub par, and The Hubs was annoyed that smoking was allowed inside but the fun factor more than compensated. The house band, The Dancing Dead, got the crowd on their feet with a diverse song list spanning many genres. When I couldn’t convince my dancing hating hubby to join me on the dance floor, I simply found two girls from Texas who didn’t mind one extra joining their group. There were many large groups in attendance when we visited, including a hen and friends in fancy dress. I would love to return with a bigger group, including my besties who would be less reluctant to join me on the dance floor. If you are looking for a night of fun and frivolity in Bali you would be hard pressed to find a better venue than Frankensteins Laboratory.
Update!
Frankensteins Laboratory have changed format. A new bar is open and there are now 2 sittings per night, an early one for the little monsters and an adults only later show. If you liked this you should check out my other Bali restaurant reviews.

I can see why the place is popular! Who wouldn’t love food with a twist? I liked the skull that was on the table. It’s too bad they food was so-so but at least the Dancing Dead was able to get the crowds on their feet!

Come for the show, compromise on the food. Got it! Looks like it;s a good deal nonetheless, hey?

I kind of love these hokey kind of places, they’re pure entertainment! Sorry to hear the food wasn’t the best, but glad the band and show was a lot of fun!
Sydney Fashion Hunter says
Me too! If I was there with my girlfriends it would have been even better as they would have danced with me lol

At first, the title somehow seems to be creepy but looking at the food, it really looks yummy. While reading your post, it made me crave for pizza! Oh the power of the internet is scary 🙁 Here, I don’t think there’s a place that will come close to that. Especially with the effects, make-up and presentation.
Sydney Fashion Hunter says
The make up is pretty amazing Maria.

Oh. I get freaked out just by looking at the photos. It looks like you had fun but I honestly don’t see myself going there. I’m such a scaredy cat!
Sydney Fashion Hunter says
Hahaha you would be fine Bernadette ?

The show looks really awesome. Frankenstein would have loved it hehe! The food is indeed so so. But the show makes up for that! And who doesnt love a pizza now and then?
Sydney Fashion Hunter says
The show was great Sabine and it was a whole lot of fun ?

Wow this gives me chills! I wonder what it feels to be in front of those monster-looking creatures? Hahaha. But Frankenstein’s lab looks really fun!

Franskentein’s Lab, and I thought it was a typical restaurant. More than the food itself, which appears to be just that, typical foods, the show is something to look forward to for people like me who has never seen it. So… after this experience, would you go for a second?

Robert for me it was all about the show and the food was less important. I would definitely go back and make try a different food option or just stick with drinks!

That club has a very interesting name, Frankensteins Laboratory. I guess everyone there is all dressed up as monsters otherwise, I’d be very disappointed LOL. Are their shows all wholesome or what?
I’ll try to ask friends around too re: that club. They might have heard of the place.
Sydney Fashion Hunter says
Dominic every one was most certainly dressed up and getting k to the spirit. In terms of ‘wholesome’ well I guess everyone has different definitions. The show was a little cheeky but I was certainly not offended and there were plenty of kids in attendance so I would say it is safe for all ages.
Johna says
Wow! What an amazing and interesting dining experience! The pizza looks so goooooood as well! Whenever I’m in Bali I’ll definitely have to check this place out 😀 😀
Sydney Fashion Hunter says
Yes it does look good but was a little disappointing. I would definitely recommend it for a great night out just don’t expect the food to be gourmet ?
Stella the Travelerette says
I’ve never heard of Frankenstein’s Laboratory. It reminds me of the Jekyll and Hyde restaurant in NYC, but there usually only the staff dresses up. The show seems a little bit like Rocky Horror. I am glad you had a good time.
Sydney Fashion Hunter says
There was definitely Rocky Horror elements in the show and I am a bit if a fan I must confess ?

This sounds like you had a blast. Good food, great show, sounds like a night to remember. Like how they’re adding a show for the little ones too. Thank you for sharing this post. Always nice to learn about new places to visit.

I think the kids early show will be great. We are heading back to Bali with a bunch of friends with the kidlets in tow and are planning to take them back to Frankensteins. I know they will love it!
